Ever since Chester and Dylan passed away shortly after one another, Pancho & Lefty have had the cage all for themselves. But that's almost certainly going to change soon, because during the night a nest of twelve "rittens" was born at Rattery Ratcity, my favourite breeder.

When I clean the cage in the weekend, I usually leave Pancho & Lefty out on the couch. But, because Lefty has been sick :-( again, today I wanted to keep an eye on them while cleaning the cage. So this time around I set up the small table as a sorta temporary ratty playground.

Because of the nice weather (23°C/73°F) this afternoon I took Pancho & Lefty out into the garden for a bit. Because I didn't dare to take out both at the same time, they had to take turns. Pancho was first, but unfortunately I have no pictures of him outside.

Ever since Lefty was so sick, now over a month ago, I've been really spoiling both boys, giving them a little something extra almost every day. Porridge, baby fruit or vegetable mash, rice, whatever vegetables I would eat myself; anything to try to regain at least some of the weight especially Lefty had lost while being sick.

Today Pancho & Lefty are 1 year and 8 months of age, which corresponds to 50 human years. Of course this calls for celebration, so this morning I treated both on little donuts. Coincidentally, just like Chester & Casey's 50th birthday, it's Wednesday, so tonight they'll be eating cooked green beans with white rice again. Happy birthday, boys!

Hup Holland hup

Yesterday the first two matches in the European soccer championship were played. Our national team (The Netherlands) will play its first match tomorrow evening, and we (me, Pancho & Lefty) are totally ready: this website as well as the cage have had an orange makeover. Lets kick off, and that the best may win (the best being The Netherlands of course).

Lefty very sick

Today I had to take Lefty to the vet. Twice. Yesterday he was already a bit quiet, and this morning he was really sick. He wouldn't eat or drink, and he'd also lost considerable weight (almost 50 grams in only two weeks time).

Ice cream 2008

With the continuing warm and sunny weather, I thought I'd make Pancho & Lefty some ice "cream" (cubes). This was a big success last year, when Pancho carried the ice cubes all the way from the bottom to the top of the cage. Pancho didn't carry them upstairs this time, but he did carry them, as you can see below.

It's in the water

It's been a warm and sunny last couple of days, with today topping at 25Â°C (â 77Â°F). So this morning I thought the boys might want to play in the water a bit to cool down. I prepared a small plastic tub, filling it with water, and then adding a few bits of muesli and noodles.

Quite a while back I saw pictures on a ratty forum of an ice hat hanging in a rat cage. I thought this was an excellent idea, so hung one in my cage, but the boys refused to use it in any way. I nevertheless kept hanging the ice hat in the cage every now and then.
