Kitchen cleaning
January 2, 2005 - So far I had put
my boys inside the transport basket while cleaning
their cage. Although cleaning the cage takes
quite some time, the boys don't seem to mind being locked up inside the
transport basket; they often use the time to take a nap. But this afternoon
I decided to let them roam free in the kitchen, with me in there cleaning
the cage. My kitchen is pretty much rat-proof, and I think they enjoyed
their stay in there.
At first they didn't really dare stepping unto the kitchen
floor, but after a few minutes Chester
was already exploring the different areas of the kitchen. I had put some of
their stuff (a small cardboard box, an old shirt, and an old shoe)
underneath a large cupboard, as a sort of base camp for them. After a while
Casey also got the hang of it, and both
rats were running curiously across the kitchen floor, while I had to
carefully watch my shoeless steps.
Chester explored really
every inch of the kitchen, and he seemed quasi-disappointed that he
couldn't get into all the cupboards. (I did clean out one drawer, in
which he could climb, and of course he did.) When I went out of the kitchen
for just a second, he waited for me to return, so he could sneak out into
the not at all rat-proof living room. Fortunately I "scared" him
right back into the kitchen, but I'm pretty confident his scheme will
succeed the next time, or the time after that.
